Torre….Torremolinos !

Do you have a favorite place you have visited? Where is it?

Many years ago, when I had a few bob, I used to travel abroad regularly for a bit of sunshine and relaxation. I never went to the same place more than once, until I bought a cheap return ticket to this iconic town on the Mediterranean Costa del Sol called Torremolinos.

Right on the southern coast of Spain, this odd little town was the centre of the first sun, sea and sangria holiday spots of the swinging sixties. A regular haunt of movie and pop stars, right up to the 80’s and even later. The rich and famous would be seen here, enjoying the wonderful micro-climate of Torremolinos.

When my week ended, and as we flew back to England, I distinctly remember looking out of the plane window as we banked over the coast leaving Málaga and saying “I’ll be seeing you again!”

I visited several times after that, usually staying in an apartment in the plush complex of the Nogalera, a bit dated now, but with an air of tired gentility and still a pricey place to stay.

Then, in the nineties, I had a really bad accident climbing in the French Alps. When I recovered, I decided that I’d had enough of chasing money, sold my business and emigrated to……Torremolinos!

I lived there happily for many years, until health and other issues called me back to England and the delightful county of Lincolnshire.

Until recently, I have visited “Torrie” many times since, and when circumstances change, I’ll return again.

What is it about this eclectic little run down shadow of the sixties that I love? It’s the mix of cultures—visitors and residents from all over the world, a vibrant gay community and the unique tropical climate.

It captured my heart and gave me a love for a country that welcomes visitors but never quite accepts you as one of their own. But I still love the people of “Torremoloco” the crazy town of the Costa del Sol !
