Jazz….wtf?

What’s something most people don’t understand?

I’ve lost count of the number of people who have approached me over the years, saying how much they enjoy my playing as they don’t like jazz. I’m playing jazz as they mention this ( between tunes).

Too many people believe jazz to be an abstract tuneless noise. Yes, there is a minority who seem to revel in making sounds that confuse and offend, then call it jazz.

Real jazz is beautiful to hear, tuneful and challenging to play. It takes years to master it in a way that is listenable.

So don’t write jazz off, just listen to different artists. Not bebop, try some Scott Hamilton for beautiful ballads, played with such tone and feeling on saxophone.

In the end there are only two types of music—good music and bad music.

  1. I know I may put you in the spot with this – but what’s your opinion of Miles Davis’ B*tches Brew? I listened to it and can safely say I appreciate his attempt to create a different jazz paradigm or a different musical paradigm altogether but it just seemed like it was a piece whose creative time had not come just yet or was altogether too far away from what it thought the future of music was.

currently listening to Chet Baker and Zoot Sims right now.

keep playing Mike. hope Lilly is well. Mike
