The first electric drip brew coffeemaker is patented in Germany and named the Wigomat after its inventor Gottlob Widmann. The angle grinder is invented by German company Ackermann + Schmitt (Flex-Elektrowerkzeuge).
What else can I say? A momentous year! I was pulled kicking and screaming into the world along with Adam Ant and Annie Lennox, Oprah Winfrey and Denzel Washington plus somewhere near 100 million others too. Wow!
Estimates put 70% of us as still breathing, which is impressive. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
I could go on dragging facts out of Google all day, not that you’d read them.
If the data crunchers want to compile a portfolio about my illustrious life they will have to go find the year themselves. They’re welcome to rob my life savings of a tenner and couple of shirt buttons then.
It’s quite humorous to look back on the year you were born. Everything looks so old fashioned. I never think of being a walking antique, born in a year of back and white TV’s and drab post-war fashion. No mobile phones, or phones of any sort for many except the rich. Certainly no computers except in the research labs, and then so rudimentary as to be laughable.
Things have changed in my lifetime, perhaps one of the most momentous periods of technological advancement ever. I wonder if it’s really made the world a better place?
