I used to be patriotic.

Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?

I served my country, took the Queen’s shilling and did 15 years. Went a lot of places and saw some weird shit. Did I feel patriotic? Not really. To my mates yes, but the country as a whole? Not really.

I used to feel safe here, but now? I wouldn’t walk in a city at night here. I found Torremolinos was safer, no druggies, loads of coppers, in fact they have three tiers of policing and the local police actually walk around! That’s radical.

What have I to be proud of now? The government? Er, not really. The judicial system? Certainly not any more.

I’m not sounding very positive here folks.

I’m happy in myself, but if I lived in a city? I wouldn’t be so cheerful!

I lived abroad before we had Brexit, I classed myself as European and anyone who asked I said I was from Wales. That always stopped them in their tracks? “Where’s that?” Was almost always the reply. Never English. That was almost the same as saying you were on day release from a leper colony.

So, to sum up, in good old school English lesson prose:

No I’m not patriotic!
